Thimphu, to a large number of lovely
high altitude lakes. You pass through terraced paddy fields and through
coniferous forests, to the settlements of Geynikha, 2,500 meters. The trail
leads up the ridge and across meadows to a pass at 4,240 meters with a
spectacular view of the whole Dagala range. You will pass through several yak
herders camps en-route the broad Labatama valley at 4,050
meters. The lakes are flourished with brown trout. Near the lakes is a mass of
wild alpine which flowers in September. The routes are not well marked; it is
more of a cross-country traverse. The trail descends steeply through mixed
forest of rhododendron.
Dagala mountain range divides two prominent
valleys of Thimphu and wangdi. The altitude of the plateau is around 4000
meters. It has many lakes of different sizes and in most lakes' one can find
trout fish. Alpine flowers, rhododendrons, different species of pheasants,
musk deer are found in abidance. The plateau is also a grazing ground for yaks
in summer. Best times for trekking in these parts are May/June and Sept/Oct.
Situated in
the heart of the Great Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan with varied climatic
conditions has been hidden for centuries. The land of the Thunder Dragon has
sequestered itself from the rest of the world. Shrouded in mystery, it did not
open its doors to tourism until 1974, and even then limited the number of its
visitors. In Bhutan, beauty lies in the land. Golden peaks surrounding valleys
that bloom with flowers of a thousand colors. A sense of discovery begins with
your first footsteps in Bhutan and grows as you travel along quiet paths through
an ancient culture. You will find life as it has been for hundred of years
