Boudhanath Monastery locates northeastern outskirts, about 11 km. from center of Kathmandu. The monastery’s big mandala is one of the largest spherical stupas in the country. The monastery lies in the ancient trade route from Tibet which enters the Kathmandu Valley through Sankhu village in the northeast corner of Kathmandu. The Stupa is said to entomb the remains of Kassapa Buddha.

When a mass of refugees entered Nepal from Tibet in the 1950s, many decided to live around Boudhanath. So, the town Boudhanath became the center of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu and Boudhanath Monastery is the Tibetan spiritual center in Boudhanath town in Kathmandu Valley.
