Kathmandu, the capital city
of Nepal, is one of the world's oldest cities. The old part of the city, with
narrow medieval streets and lovely little shrines, centers on the Durbar Square.
Here one can find distinctive pagoda-roofed temples, stone sculptures, old
monasteries and historic monuments.
It is in a beautiful green valley that is home to three major cities: Kathmandu,
Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. The city is very rich in its cultural heritage and is
full of ancient historical monuments. One can absorb everything from the parade
of temples and the ancient palaces to the more modern buildings and palace in
the back - drop of the omnipresent awe inspiring majesty of the youngest
mountain ranges of the world, the Himalayas. Major places of interest in
Kathmandu are: The Royal Palace, Hanuman Dhoka, Basantapur Burja, Kumari Temple
(The Living Goddess), Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupati Temple,
Gokarna, Dakshinkali and Godawari. There are also other sights to see in Patan -
city of thousand Gods and Bhaktapur - city of devotees. It is the political and
economic center of the country with direct air links to the outside world.
Pokhara a
magnificent valley of lakes and mountains is the second largest tourist
destination in Nepal. The valley is - among other things - popular for very
close views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), the
Annapurna massif and other greatest mountains belongings to the Annapurna
Ranges. The Fish-tail Mountain stands only 25 km away from Pokhara. Its
reflection in the Lake Fewa is considered one of the most beautiful sights in
Nepal. This is s also the base point for many treks and expeditions into the
Central Nepal Himalayas, like the Annapurna Circuit, Mustang etc. It is also the
starting point for many rafting expeditions as well.
