Lumbini is the birth
place where the newly born prince Siddhartha (known as Buddha)
took his first seven steps and uttered an epoch-making message
to the suffering humanity. The happened in a beautiful sal
grove, which is now the focal point of the Lumbini Garden area.
Maya Devi, the queen of Sakya King Suddhodana of Kapilvastu,
while passing through the Lumbini Garden, on the day of
'Baisakha Purnima' (Full Moon Day of May 623BC), took a bath in
the Pushkarini (the sacred pond) and soon after she took support
of a tree branch, then gave birth to the Crown Prince
Siddhartha, who became Buddha.
Also known as “Buddha Purnima” or
simply as “Buddha’s Birthday”, Buddha Jayanti honors Lord Buddha and is one of
the most sacred days of the year in Nepal. Calculated by the lunar calendar, the
Lord Buddha’s birthday falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month and is a
day of great celebrations. Buddhists from all over the world travel to Kathmandu
to attend the festival which includes ceremonies, prayer meetings and meditation
sessions.
As the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord
Buddha falls on the same day of full moon of the month of Baisakh, Buddhists
around the world, including Nepal, observe Buddha Jayanti with respect and
devotion to Buddha.
