Budanilkantha lies at the base of Shivapuri Peak. This is Shivapuri Peak hiking start point. Budanilkantha is one of the famous pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists, an example of religious harmony of Kathmandu civilization. Over 1,000 years old, 16 ft tall sleeping god ‘Bishnu’ arises several curiosities. The marvelous statue of Hindu god Bishnu is said to resemble the face of Buddha. After a short tour at Budanilkantha temple, we drive towards Shivapuri National Park entrance. Entering the park, we walk into the woods dotted with military huts, to come to the dirt road.

Shivapuri Peak (8960ft/2732m), inside Shivapuri National Park is all time exiting and favorite place to hike from different dimensions. The peak is second highest hill around Kathmandu rim. Shivapuri remains untouched due to her spiritual significance. A Buddhist monastery naming Nagi Gompa is there about 3km uphill from the main gate above Budhanilkantha. Around 100 nuns are resident and there are soaring valley views. From here, the steep trail leads to Shivapuri Peak via Bagdwar. Bagdwar is the source of holy River Bagmati which pours out of two stone tiger mouths. There are several meditation caves around Bagdwar including Chhaitye (Buddism monuments). The site is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. There are couple of hermitages on the ridge just above Bagdwar lived by sages.

Shivapuri is an important watershed, from here major demands of the drinking water supplies to Kathmandu till early 2016. With understanding her significance, government proclam Shivapuri as Shivapuri watershed and wildlife reserve in 1975, declared National Park in 2002 and expanded covering 159sq km (61 sq mi) with extended by the Nagarjun Forest Reserve covering 15 km2 (5.8 sq mi) in 2009. Now Shivapuri National Park covers part of 4 Nepal’s administrative districts: Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot and Dhading.

Shivapuri Peak hiking is worth ful for bird waching. The park records 177 species of birds. Numbers of rare orchids are also inhabitant of this park. From the top the view is incredible. The Himalayan panorama of Ganesh Himal Range, Langtang and Jugal Himal are unbeleviably beautiful. Manaslu (8,163m), the 8th highest peak in the world is sticking out of the extensive Himalayan peaks towards further left. The Himalayan fresh air is certainly re-energize and make our life more conscious. After climbing about 4 hours with gaining 1,000m altitude from the National Park entrance, we gain Shivapuri peak. About three hours take, same way back to the gate we entried. Good physical preperation and consciousness helps to succeed the Shivapuri Peak hiking. So, we suggest to prepare physically and mentally to have this day walk adventerously as well as joyfully.
