Managing the packing list for trekking in Nepal for overnight outside the house is very difficult if you haven’t done before. Tourists use to ask us about the packing¬†List for Trekking in Nepal.

The requirement of gears will vary depending on where to travel, size of the group, type of your trip, and duration of your trip. Before packing you should ask these questions to your self. Are you hiking near a populated area or into a dense forest? Are there any animals or insects? Are you traveling alone or you had booked from a travel agency? Most of the equipment is managed by the travel agency if you book the tour package.

The common mistake of all travelers is to over-pack. You load your rucksack with unnecessary stuff and ruin your trekking. So, feel free to get inspired but keep in mind that all lists may not suit you. The following Packing List for Trekking in Nepal is only for general guidelines and your personal items are of your individual interest.


Trekking Bag

Trekking Bags is one of the primary equipment which helps you to walk freely. While you are in trekking in nature bags help you to carry all your stuff. While packing the bag it shouldn’t be heavy so that it won’t complicate the trekking. The bag size varies according to the type of holiday and duration. The different types of bags vary according to duration.

Duffel Bag

The normal size of the Duffel Bag is around 80L. If you are doing camping trekking or others long duration trek then you need this bag. Normally, these bags are carried by the porters. The bag should be waterproof so the stuff will not be damage.

Rucksack with a waterproof cover

A rucksack is normally carried by you while doing trekking. Rucksack contains immediate equipment like changing clothes, first aid kit, water bottles, and other electronic gadgets. The normal size of the Ruck Sack is around 40-50L.

Day Pack

Day Pack is smaller than Ruck Sack. This bag is used in hiking and other short trekking. The normal size of Day Pack will be 25-30L.

Money Belt

Money Belt is essential in all types of trekking to put expensive gadgets and money. There may be a high chance of loss of such things so you can carry a money belt.



While you are trekking to Nepal Himalayas you will experience the wide variation of altitude. You should bring the layer clothes do it will be easy to add or remove while ascending or descending the altitude.


Upper Body

T-shirts include both long and short sleeve, lightweight is the best options during trekking. During cold long-sleeve shirts can be used as a base layer. Cotton is not recommended while you are packing clothes. They don’t absorb the sweat and also block the breathability.

Thermal Vest and tops
A good quality thermal vest is recommended in high altitude trekking. Remember the clothes should be lightweight so your back will not be heavy.
Thermal tops help to keep the body warm and also absorb the sweat from your body.

Fleece Jacket
It is made from polyester synthetic wool and lightweight too. Fleece Jacket normally doesn’t come in waterproof so you can use it as the second layer.

Waterproof Jacket
Waterproof Jacket should be fully protectable shell material. It should protect you from wind, rain, and snow. This jacket is mainly used in the higher altitude of the trek.

Women innerwear
for women trekkers, please carry synthetic clothes. It helps to absorb the moisture from your skin.


Lower Body

Under Garments
Lightweight and moisture absorbable undergarments are recommended. Long undergarments will help to keep you warm during the night.

Thermal trouser
If you are traveling to a higher altitude then you should wear thermal trousers. During night time it saves us from entering cold to our body.

Hiking shorts and pants
During day time you may feel hot at low altitude so use hiking shorts. It is also comfortable while you are walking. In high altitude and night time use long pants so you remain warm. Buy lightweight nylon pants so they can dry quickly.

Waterproof shell pants
If you are going trekking to monsoon season please bring waterproof pants. You can put some while you are trekking in good season too because there is no control over the weather.



Thin inner socks
Don’t buy socks made from cotton. Always buy socks that absorb moisture from your feet. During trekking, your feet may be wet so it should be breathable and moisture-wicking.

Thick warm wool socks
Thick warm wool socks are for high altitude trekking in the mountain region. These socks should be thick, super warm, and comfortable so it will protect you from blisters.

Trekking Boots
The most important part of your equipment is comfortable and quality trekking boots. During your trek, the trial will be rocky, slippery, and quite uneven. So, if you get low-quality boots that are uncomfortable then you will gone a ruin your trekking.

Please avoid leather boots that are heavy and buy full ankle support boots. The trial may be moisture so bring waterproof trekking boots.

Hiking sandals
Hiking sandals are mostly using during your camp stay in the evening. With hiking sandals, it will be easy for you to cross the rivers during trekking.



Light gloves
For the little cold temperature, light fleece gloves are used.

Heavyweight gloves
When the temperature is colder then you need to wear these gloves to be extra warm. These gloves must be waterproof so that it will protect you from wind, rain, and snow.



Wollen Hat
If you are traveling to the mountain area then you need a woolen hat. During the day it will be hot but the need will be colder. So, buy a woolen hat that covers your ears.

Sun Hat
In the day time, you need this so that you will not have a sunburn. It also gives you shade by saving your face and head from the sun.

Buy a long scarf which will save you from dust and wind. While you are in the city area there may be dust so you need to cover your nose and mouth. As you live in the city area there will be no dust.

We will recommend Good UV protected sunglasses so that the sun will not harm your eyes. In high altitude you there are high-intensity UV rays so buy good sunglasses. If you are going to mountain the white snow may reflect your eye. It will be uneasy to see the road without sunglasses. If you are crossing the high pass then the sunglass is highly recommended.

Head Lamp
Head Lamp is far better than Hand torch. You can walk by your hand free. In high altitude, there may not be electricity at night so it will be comfortable while going to the bathroom.


Camping Gears

Backpacking tent
If you were willing to do camping trekking then you need to carry lightweight backpacking tents. The tent should be durable as it is the shelter during your trekking.

Sleeping Bags
Buy sleeping bags with down insulation as compared to synthetics. It offers you a much better warm and lightweight with compressibility.

Sleeping pad or mat
It should be light, comfortable, and can roll or fold into a small cylinder.
