According to the holy Hindu texts Shriswastani Katha and Himbatkhanda, this new trail is believed to be the path taken by Lord Shiva and Parvati to reach Gosainkunda from the Dupchheswor Mahadev Temple. The trail traverses through diverse vegetation, from sub-tropical to sub-alpine and alpine climates within Langtang National Park. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy the region’s wildlife, diverse flora like alder, rhododendron, mountain oak, birch, and juniper, and the melodious sounds of chirping birds. How to reach Nau Kunda?

The trip begins with 4 hours ride from Samakushi, Kathmandu to Ramati Bazar, followed by a half-hour walk to Dupcheshwor Mahadev Temple. From there, hikers can proceed to Shikharbeshi or Bagmara, then Malabhanjynag for an overnight stay. You will reach Sagar Kunda (approx. 2,900 m) after 3 hours of trek which is the first lake of this trek. This is also known as the second Gosainkunda of Nuwakot. After ascending for about four hours, you arrive at Rauchhuli (approx. 3,750 m) for an overnight stay.

The next morning, you can enjoy a stunning sunrise before hiking towards Nau Kunda Valley. The higher route is recommended for adventurous trekkers and offers a challenging but rewarding experience. The lower route is more manageable, with stone-pebbled trails and yellow markings on rocks for guidance.

On the fourth day, you can explore the Nau Kunda Valley and eventually reach Gosainkunda to celebrate the Janai Purnima festival. We will then descend towards Dhunchhe, Nuwakot, or Helambu from the Surya Kunda side at the fifth day. You can also start your journey from Dhunchhe or Helambu and descend from the Nau Kunda Valley towards Dupcheshor Mahadev and Kathmandu.

Despite its proximity to Kathmandu, the Nau Kunda Valley remains relatively unknown and lacks readily available accommodations and facilities. Therefore, it is advisable to travel with local guides who can arrange lodging and food. Temporary tea houses are set up during the Janai Purnima festival, so securing accommodations in advance is recommended.
