WHO recognized Dhulikhel as the first healthy city

28 August 2024: Dhulikhel is a well-known tourist town in Kavrepalanchowk, Nepal, and the WHO recognized Dhulikhel as the first healthy city, it is also the second healthiest city in Asia. The announcement was made by Dr. Suvajee Good, Programme Coordinator of WHO’s Department of Ethics and Social Determinants, on Tuesday. As a result of this recognition, Dhulikhel has received a reward of $5,000.

Dhulikhel scored 65.48, placing it just behind Pune City Banda in India, which holds the title of Asia’s healthiest city. The honor was awarded based on the city’s policy reforms in health. They also see the progress toward sustainable development goals in the health sector and environmental improvements. They also evaluate the access to healthcare for the underprivileged, the management of chronic and communicable diseases, and advancements in community and primary healthcare.

Dhulikhel’s mayor, Ashok Kumar Byanju, expressed pride in the city’s achievements, highlighting that it is the first city in Nepal and the second in Asia to receive such an honor.

Dhulikhel, a town of stunning natural beauty, is located in the Kavrepalanchok district at the eastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley. This city is just south of the Himalayas which have an altitude of 1,550 meters. It is situated approximately 30 km southeast of Kathmandu and 74 km southwest of Kodari on the Arniko Highway.

Two major highways, the B.P. Highway and Arniko Highway, pass through Dhulikhel, with the Arniko Highway linking Kathmandu to the border town of Kodari in Tibet. Historically, Dhulikhel was known as Shrikhandapur. It is a Buddhist name, and remnants of that era still exist in the form of ancient stupas. A pleasant three-hour hike from the town takes you to Namo Buddha, a place with a delightful blend of Buddhist and Hindu temples. You will find several ancient temples dedicated to various deities like Sweta Bhairava, Hari Siddhi, Devistan, Shiva, and Narayana. They have their own unique history and significance.
